The wait is over. Warner Bros has officially released the first trailer for Mortal Kombat II, and it’s exactly the kind of bone-crushing, blood-soaked spectacle fans were hoping for. Dropped on July 17, 2025, the trailer brings long-missing characters, high-stakes tournament battles, and a darker, more intense tone that promises to deliver on everything the 2021 reboot left on the table.
Among the biggest highlights? The arrival of Johnny Cage, played by The Boys star Karl Urban, whose cocky, scene-stealing presence immediately sets the tone. Fans had been begging for Cage’s inclusion since his noticeable absence in the first film, and now, he’s here, front and centre, ready to fight.
A Glorious Return to Form
The 2021 Mortal Kombat reboot served as a reintroduction to the brutal world of Outworld and the Earth realm, but it left many fans craving more. While it introduced new faces like Cole Young and teased deeper lore, it skipped the actual Mortal Kombat tournament — a decision that drew mixed reactions.
Mortal Kombat II, however, wastes no time correcting that. The trailer teases a full-scale tournament, with the Earth realm’s survival hanging in the balance. Familiar faces like Liu Kang, Jax, and Sonya Blade return, while new characters, including Kitana, Jade, Baraka, Sindel, and Shao Kahn, enter the arena. Even previously fallen warriors like Kano and Kung Lao seem to be resurrected, likely as revenants, true to the game’s lore.
Brutality Turned Up to Eleven
One thing that stands out in the trailer is the escalated violence. Fatalities — the signature ultra-violent finishers from the video games — are showcased in all their gruesome glory. We see arms ripped off, blades to the throat, and spine-cracking moves that would make any fan cheer (or wince).
Director Simon McQuoid returns to helm the sequel, while the screenplay is penned by Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight, The Umbrella Academy). Their approach seems clear: go bigger, bolder, and bloodier.
Even actor Karl Urban couldn’t contain his excitement, comparing the scale and tone of Mortal Kombat II to The Road Warrior, calling it a massive leap forward in storytelling, stakes, and spectacle.
From Reboot to Redemption
Let’s rewind: the first Mortal Kombat hit theatres and HBO Max in April 2021. It grossed over $84 million globally, a solid figure considering pandemic-era restrictions. It was praised for its loyalty to the franchise’s look and feel, but criticized for lacking tournament action and skipping fan-favourite characters like Johnny Cage.
Now, four years later, Mortal Kombat II is shaping up to be the true spiritual successor that hardcore fans have long awaited. With a bigger cast, more faithful character designs, and a darker tone, the sequel finally embraces what makes Mortal Kombat iconic — ruthless battles, over-the-top fatalities, and a universe where losing means death.
