Mercedes-Benz has triumphantly rolled out the 600,000th G-Class from its production facility in Graz, Austria—a testament to the model’s rare longevity and appeal. This milestone comes just two years after the brand celebrated the 500,000th unit, underscoring the G-Class’s sustained momentum in the luxury SUV segment.

Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology

The milestone vehicle is the groundbreaking G 580 with EQ Technology, cloaked in elegant Obsidian Black Metallic. It's an all-electric model that seamlessly combines the G-Class’s trophy heritage—solid ladder frame, iconic boxy silhouette, three locking differentials—with a modern, zero-emissions powertrain. This vehicle is not just a milestone marker—it’s a statement of the brand’s electrified future.

Tradition Meets Customization

What truly fuels G-Class fame is its bespoke appeal. Through G Manufaktur, over 90% of buyers customize their vehicles from a palette of over 20,000 paint shades, turning each G-Class into a distinct expression of personal style.

Global Demand: Who Loves the G-Class Most?

While Mercedes-Benz doesn’t break down G-Class sales per country, data from its “Top-End” vehicle segment paints a clear picture:

  • The United States remains the strongest single market, driving a significant share of G-Class demand. In 2024, Mercedes sold over 324,500 passenger cars in the U.S., with the Top-End Luxury category (including the G-Class) seeing double-digit growth.

  • In Q1 2025, G-Class sales climbed 18% year-on-year, with the U.S. contributing heavily to that surge.

  • Other key markets include Germany, China, and the Middle East, but the U.S. consistently leads in volume for the iconic SUV.

The Electric Model—A Tough Road Ahead

Despite the celebration, the electric G 580 is facing challenges in the market. Between its global debut and April 2025, just 1,450 units were sold worldwide—far fewer than its combustion-engine sibling, which moved almost 9,700 units in the same period.

  • China recorded only 58 electric G-Class registrations since its launch.

  • South Korea had a similarly low uptake with 61 units sold.

  • The United States, despite being the largest G-Class market, had zero recorded deliveries of the electric model during that timeframe.

Industry analysts cite its high weight, premium pricing, and limited range as barriers, though Mercedes-Benz remains committed to refining the electric offering while continuing combustion versions well into the next decade.

The 600,000th G-Class is more than just a production number—it’s a celebration of adaptability, blending 45 years of heritage with future-ready innovation.

While the electric G-Class faces a steep climb, its existence proves that even an automotive icon known for brute strength and off-road dominance can embrace sustainability. As Mercedes-Benz balances tradition with electrification, the G-Class looks set to remain both a status symbol and a technological trailblazer.
