Mario isn’t just stomping Goombas anymore, he’s heading for the cosmos. Nintendo and Illumination have officially announced The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, blasting into U.S. theaters on April 3, 2026 (Japan follows April 24).
The film continues the success story of The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023), which grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide and proved that audiences still can’t get enough of everyone’s favorite plumber.
Super Mario Galaxy
The movie will take its cues from the beloved Wii classic Super Mario Galaxy (2007). Expect planet-hopping adventures, bizarre gravity puzzles, and of course, Bowser cooking up trouble on a cosmic scale.
One burning fan question: will Rosalina, the game’s celestial guardian, finally make her big-screen debut? No confirmation yet, but all signs point to yes.
The Team Behind It
Good news for continuity lovers—most of the original cast and crew are back:
Chris Pratt as Mario
Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach
Charlie Day as Luigi
Jack Black as Bowser
Directed by Aaron Horvath & Michael Jelenic
Written by Matthew Fogel
Produced by Illumination + Nintendo, distributed by Universal
Why Now?
Timing is everything. Here’s why Nintendo is pushing Mario into orbit:
The first film crushed at the box office.
Super Mario Bros. just turned 40, and nothing says “anniversary” like a blockbuster sequel.
Nintendo is remastering Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 for Switch/Switch 2 in October 2025, perfect hype fuel.
What Fans Are Hoping For
Gravity-bending action: Mario walking upside-down on planetoids better make the cut.
Galactic visuals: sweeping space vistas, sparkling starfields, and surreal worlds.
Epic music: the Galaxy games had soaring orchestral scores, fans want that magic on the big screen.
Easter eggs galore: Nintendo’s universe is too rich not to sprinkle with cameos and nods.
If The Super Mario Galaxy Movie lands smoothly, Nintendo could be setting up its own cinematic universe. More spin-offs? A Luigi’s Mansion flick? Donkey Kong’s solo adventure? The possibilities are endless.
This isn’t just another kids’ animation. It’s Nintendo doubling down on the idea that Mario belongs not just on consoles, but in cinemas too. With the right mix of heart, humor, and space-sized spectacle, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie could be the blockbuster that takes Mario fans, and newcomers, out of this world.
