Thailand is about to make a big move on the global sports stage. The country has announced it will spend around $1.23 billion to host its first ever Formula 1 Grand Prix, planned for 2028 in Bangkok. The plan was confirmed by Thai government officials earlier this month. They see this as more than just a race. It is a chance to put Thailand on the world map as a top destination for sports, tourism, and business. Most of the money will go into building and upgrading infrastructure in and around Bangkok. This includes roads, public transport systems, hotels, and facilities needed to host an event as large as a Formula 1 race. Part of the plan also focuses on creating a new street circuit in the heart of the capital, designed to showcase Bangkok’s famous skyline and cultural landmarks.

The government expects the event to bring in billions more over time. According to estimates, the F1 race could attract over 300,000 visitors during the race weekend, boosting hotels, restaurants, local shops, and many small businesses. Officials believe the global media coverage alone will help promote Thailand’s image and bring more tourists year round. Hosting an F1 race is not cheap, but the Thai authorities see it as an investment in the future. They hope it will encourage other international sports and entertainment events to come to Thailand. At the same time, it is part of a bigger push to revive tourism after the pandemic and diversify the country’s economy.

Beyond the money, many Thais feel proud that the country will finally have its name on the Formula 1 calendar alongside cities like Monaco, Singapore, and Abu Dhabi. Fans and business owners alike hope it will create new opportunities and excitement for years to come.

For now, the race is still three years away, but preparations have already begun. If all goes as planned, 2028 could mark the start of a thrilling new chapter for Thailand and its place in global motorsports.
