When trade wars get too loud, sometimes the cleverest response is satire. Swiss watchmaker Swatch has launched a new special-edition model, “WHAT IF…TARIFFS?”, a bold and cheeky dig at the 39% U.S. tariff on Swiss goods. Instead of issuing dry statements, Swatch put the controversy on a dial — and it’s already creating waves in Switzerland and beyond.
39% U.S. Tariff on Swiss Watches: What It Means for Swatch
Earlier in 2025, the U.S. government introduced a 39% import tariff on Swiss watches and goods, a move that rattled one of Switzerland’s proudest industries. Swiss timepieces, from luxury labels like Omega to more accessible Swatch models, are cultural exports as much as they are commercial products.
For watchmakers, this policy meant higher prices for U.S. customers, potential drops in demand, and tougher competition globally. Swatch, however, decided to respond not only in boardrooms — but also in boutiques.
Swatch “WHAT IF…TARIFFS?” Watch Design and Message
Swatch’s protest piece is as much art as accessory. The “WHAT IF…TARIFFS?” watch features:
Reversed 3 and 9 on the dial, directly referencing the 39% tariff.
A bold “%” symbol stamped on the caseback.
Pricing of CHF 139 (~$175), available only in Switzerland to avoid the very tariffs it mocks.
The brand has made its intent clear: the watch is temporary. “Once the U.S. changes its tariffs … we will immediately stop selling this watch,” Swatch confirmed. Demand has already outpaced supply, with delivery delays of up to two weeks.
Swatch Price Hikes in the USA After Tariffs
Beyond satire, Swatch also faces business reality. To offset the tariff’s cost, the group announced U.S. price hikes between 5% and 15% across its brands.
For instance, the popular MoonSwatch Moonshine Gold has already risen from $400 to $450 in the U.S. Swatch says demand remains strong despite the increases, with American consumers largely “understanding” of the policy impact.
Still, higher prices could test brand loyalty long term, especially for entry-level models that have historically appealed to younger and first-time collectors.
Negotiations and Future of the “WHAT IF…TARIFFS?” Watch
The fate of “WHAT IF…TARIFFS?” depends on ongoing negotiations. Swiss officials are currently in talks with U.S. trade representatives, and early signs suggest cautious optimism. U.S. Commerce Secretary Lutnick has described the discussions as “fairly upbeat,” hinting that a compromise might eventually be reached.
Until then, Swatch is using the model to keep public pressure high — turning a technical trade dispute into a story people are talking about at cafés, on social media, and now on their wrists.
Tariff Protest Watch Matters for Branding
Swatch’s move works on multiple levels:
Buzz factor: Tariffs rarely make headlines, but a watch mocking tariffs does.
Consumer participation: Owning the watch feels like joining the protest.
Brand positioning: Swatch shows it can be playful, daring, and socially relevant without losing its identity.
Of course, there are risks. U.S. buyers might not appreciate paying more, and political satire doesn’t always age well. But in the short term, Swatch has reframed a financial hit as cultural commentary — and that’s powerful branding.
Swatch Turns Trade War Into Wristwear
The “WHAT IF…TARIFFS?” watch proves that sometimes design can speak louder than policy papers. It’s witty, symbolic, and yes, a little petty — but that’s what makes it resonate.
Swatch has turned a trade war into wristwear. And in doing so, they’ve reminded us that watches don’t just tell the time. Sometimes, they tell the truth.
