The Malaysia Games (SUKMA) is set for its biggest expansion yet, with esports, chess, cricket, and kabaddi making their official debut at the 2026 edition in Selangor. The announcement came after the SUKMA Supreme Council, chaired by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, approved the inclusion of the four sports following strong proposals from national sports associations and state bodies.
In addition to the new introductions, boxing and softball have been elevated to mandatory sports starting from 2026, bringing the total to 34 sports, 30 of which are compulsory. The Games will take place from 15 to 24 August 2026, with Selangor hosting for the first time since 1998.

The addition of esports marks SUKMA’s recognition of the country’s fast-growing digital gaming scene, providing competitive gamers a platform at a multi-sport event alongside traditional athletes. Chess, long a staple in school and club circuits, now steps into the SUKMA spotlight, offering a new medal pathway for states with strong intellectual sport programs.
Cricket’s inclusion reflects steady grassroots development and rising regional participation, while kabaddi—deeply rooted in Malaysia’s cultural communities—receives long-awaited national-level recognition.
With the Supreme Council’s decision final, state sports councils and associations now have nearly two years to prepare. This early certainty is expected to drive facility upgrades, new state-level tournaments, and stronger talent scouting in the lead-up to the Games.
Mandatory status for boxing and softball means states will need to invest in training infrastructure and coaching for these sports, ensuring competitive participation across the board. The move also strengthens SUKMA’s core program while giving flexibility for hosts to innovate.
As Selangor prepares for the Games, athletes and teams are expected to cross over from university, club, and community leagues into the SUKMA ecosystem, especially in the newly added sports. The expansion ensures that SUKMA 2026 will be the most inclusive and diverse edition yet, reflecting both Malaysia’s sporting heritage and its modern competitive spirit.
