Public Transport to Petrol Pumps: TNG eWallet Simplifies Everyday Mobility

Updated: Jul 6

Just two months after opening its eWallet to international tourists and making cashless payments more seamless and accessible. Touch ‘n Go is also enhancing daily mobility for Malaysians with two major updates. These include the digital activation of the My50 travel pass and in-app fuel payments at PETRONAS stations. Together, they signal a shift from a basic payments app to a more integrated mobility experience.

This evolution comes at a time when convenience and speed are defining digital adoption, especially in transport. These updates help resolve long-standing user pain points while laying the groundwork for a more connected and inclusive digital public infrastructure.

A Long-Awaited Fix for My50 Commuters

The My50 pass has long been a lifeline for regular commuters. At RM50 per month, it offers unlimited travel on Rapid KL rail and bus services, a critical affordability tool for urban workers. However the physical process of renewing the pass has been notoriously inconvenient. Users were required to visit designated counters in person, often queuing during peak hours just to top up.

As of 1 July, that friction is finally being addressed. TNG eWallet users can now purchase and activate the My50 pass digitally. The rollout is the result of a collaboration between Prasarana and the Touch ‘n Go Group, aimed at modernising the commuter experience and encouraging a cashless transition.

The new feature is open to Malaysian citizens with compatible smartphones and requires one-time electronic identity verification. Once verified, users can activate and renew their passes entirely through the app. This shift transforms what was once a time-consuming routine into a simple, app-based process that takes just minutes. Touch ‘n Go Sdn Bhd CEO Praba Sangarajoo said, “The collaboration reflects the company’s continued commitment to providing digital solutions that meet the daily needs of users.”

TNG eWallet Now Works at PETRONAS Pumps Across Malaysia

In tandem, TNG Digital has teamed up with Setel Ventures to enable fuel payments at over 1,000 PETRONAS stations. The integration embeds Setel’s pump-and-pay functionality directly into the TNG eWallet, allowing users to pay for fuel without leaving their vehicles or downloading a separate app.

For PETRONAS, this unlocks access to TNG’s more than 21 million eWallet users. For drivers, it’s one less app to juggle in an already app-heavy routine.

To encourage adoption, the first 50,000 eligible transactions will receive RM5 in Mesra Rewards points. Users also continue to earn GOrewards with every purchase.

Setel CEO Abdullah Ayman Awaluddin said, “The move reflects the company’s strategy to embed its services into high-frequency user environments.” TNG Digital CEO Alan Ni echoed that sentiment, highlighting how the integration increases convenience and creates new engagement points within PETRONAS’s national retail network.

Cashless as a Competitive Advantage

Taken together, these upgrades show how TNG Digital is evolving beyond a basic payment app. Integrating everyday services like public transport and fuel payments, it is becoming a key part of Malaysia’s broader mobility infrastructure.

This shift carries strategic significance. For businesses, tapping into the TNG ecosystem offers access to a large, digitally engaged user base. For the public sector, it provides a scalable channel to support

national digitalisation goals, from encouraging cashless habits to improving service delivery and reducing congestion.

These developments also align with national priorities outlined in Bank Negara Malaysia’s Financial Sector Blueprint 2022 to 2026, which emphasises inclusive, efficient, and digitally connected payment systems.

Making Digital Transit Work for the People

From the user’s perspective, these changes are about more than technology; they’re about reclaiming time and reducing friction. The digital My50 pass eliminates a routine pain point that affects hundreds of thousands of commuters every month. Similarly, the ability to pay for fuel directly in the TNG eWallet streamlines a high-frequency, habitual activity.

Both features are relatively small in scope but significant in impact. They reflect a deeper shift toward building a digital ecosystem where essential services are accessible, fast, and integrated. If well-executed, this could lay the groundwork for further integrations, such as MyCity pass digitisation, EV charging, and even real-time mobility insights.

As TNG continues to scale across touchpoints, one thing is clear: the future of cashless mobility in Malaysia is no longer just conceptual. It’s arriving, and increasingly, it lives inside your smartphone.
