Prada’s Indian Awakening: From Controversy to Collaboration with Kolhapuri Artisans

When Italian luxury house Prada debuted its Spring/Summer 2026 menswear collection in Milan, one item stood out—not for innovation, but for familiarity. The open-toe leather sandals bore a striking resemblance to Kolhapuri chappals, a centuries-old handmade footwear staple from Maharashtra, India. With a staggering price tag of US$800 and no initial cultural attribution, Prada faced global accusations of cultural appropriation.

Critics online pointed out that these traditional Indian sandals are typically sold for less than ₹300 in local markets, and many argued that the design fell under India’s Geographical Indication (GI) protections. Initially dismissed as "leather sandals," the backlash sparked a widespread debate over the ethics of high fashion borrowing from folk traditions.

But instead of letting the controversy simmer, Prada responded—surprisingly, with humility and action.

From Fashion Faux Pas to Cultural Reckoning

Facing heat from Indian netizens, celebrities, and even members of the Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, Prada’s CSR lead Lorenzo Bertelli acknowledged the sandals' Indian roots. The brand soon expressed its openness to working directly with Indian artisans. In July 2025, a Prada delegation landed in Kolhapur to meet local craftsmen, understand their legacy, and explore potential partnerships.

This pivot signaled more than just damage control—it hinted at a conscious move toward ethical fashion collaboration. Talks have begun around creating a limited-edition “Made in India” capsule collection that would elevate Kolhapuri artistry on the world stage while ensuring fair trade and representation.

Artisans React: Cautious Optimism

While some artisans welcomed Prada’s interest as long-overdue recognition, others remain skeptical. Generations of Indian craftsmen have seen their work duplicated with no credit, let alone compensation. This time, they’re demanding not just a seat at the table, but co-authorship and royalties.

Still, the spotlight on Kolhapuri chappals has already made waves. Sales for genuine pairs surged across India, and social media buzz around the scandal unexpectedly brought local brands and shoemakers newfound fame.

This incident underscores a larger issue in global fashion: the fine line between inspiration and appropriation. As luxury brands increasingly look to the Global South for creative ideas, the onus is on them to engage with cultural respect, transparency, and fair economics.

If Prada proceeds with a true artisan collaboration, it could become a blueprint for how heritage meets haute couture—not through exploitation, but through empowerment.

Prada’s delegation has proposed to work with government bodies like MACCIA to elevate quality, improve exports, and co-design future collections. If successful, this would mark the first official tie-up between an Italian luxury brand and Kolhapuri artisans, blending traditional Indian craft with international fashion design.

The world will be watching: not just to see what Prada launches next, but whether it walks the talk on cultural integrity.
