Apple’s September event delivered exactly what the rumour mill promised, and then some. The iPhone 17 lineup (iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the new iPhone Air) officially dropped, with pre-orders starting September 12 and global availability on September 19. Pricing kicks off at $799 for the base model and climbs past $1,199 for the Pro Max.
So, what’s actually new? And more importantly, is this enough to make you ditch your iPhone 15 or 16? Let’s dive.
iPhone 17: Bigger, Brighter, Faster Displays
Apple finally brought 120 Hz ProMotion displays to the base iPhone 17. That’s right, buttery scrolling and smoother animations aren’t just for Pro users anymore. The standard iPhone now has a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR OLED, wrapped in slimmer bezels and contoured edges that feel less brick-like in the hand.
Meanwhile, “Ceramic Shield 2” is promising 3× the scratch resistance of the already-tough glass we’ve had since iPhone 12. Durability may not be sexy, but it saves you from spending another RM200 on a screen protector.
Cameras: The Pro Line Pushes Into DSLR Territory
The iPhone 17 and 17 Air both get a refreshed 48MP Dual Fusion camera system with smarter low-light handling. Great for everyday shooters.
But the real story is the Pro line: three 48MP Fusion cameras (Main, Ultra-Wide, and Telephoto). Early hands-on shots show cleaner zoom and sharper low-light portraits, plus upgraded computational photography that stacks multiple exposures with less noise.
If you’re into video, the new Cinematic Pro Mode lets you shoot in Apple Log with real-time LUT previews, catnip for content creators.
A19 Chip, Better Cooling, Longer Battery
Under the hood, Apple’s A19 Bionic chip is built for efficiency, paired with a new vapour chamber cooling system on the Pro models. Translation: you can actually game or edit 4K video without the device roasting your hand.
Battery life gets a bump, too, the Pro Max reportedly adds an extra 2 hours of screen-on time compared to last year. The iPhone Air, being the thinner sibling, takes a small hit on endurance, but that’s the trade-off for sleekness.
iOS 26 + Apple Intelligence
Out of the box, iPhone 17 ships with iOS 26, featuring Apple’s AI push (“Apple Intelligence”). Think: smarter Live Translate, auto-summaries in Messages and Mail, and a more proactive Siri that can finally feel like a digital assistant instead of an annoying roommate.
Dynamic Island is still here, as is the customizable Action Button, now with deeper shortcuts (like instantly opening camera presets or launching Shazam).
Who Should Upgrade?
iPhone 14 or older: The iPhone 17 is a no-brainer — you’ll feel the leap in display smoothness, camera clarity, and raw speed.
iPhone 15 owners: Tempting, especially with the Pro models, but not essential unless you’re big into mobile photography or content creation.
iPhone 16 Pro owners: Honestly, sit this one out unless you want the bragging rights of the Air or need that improved cooling and battery.
Apple’s Playbook
Apple introducing the iPhone Air signals a new strategy: capture the crowd that craves premium feel without going full Pro. It’s slim, it’s chic, and it’s priced in that sweet spot between standard and Pro.
Combined with more storage at the base tier and aggressive AI integration, Apple is making sure the iPhone 17 feels like a meaningful generational leap, not just another spec bump.
The iPhone 17 lineup isn’t revolutionary, but it’s refined where it counts. Apple fixed long-standing complaints (refresh rate on base models, durability, and cooling) and doubled down on cameras and battery life.
If you’re a creator, gamer, or someone who just can’t stand a stuttery screen, this launch finally justifies an upgrade.
