Manchester United picked up their first win of the pre season tour with a 2-1 victory over West Ham in New Jersey, thanks to two goals from Bruno Fernandes that lifted the team’s spirits after a slow start to the summer.
United took the lead early in the game when Fernandes calmly converted a penalty after a handball in the box. The captain looked sharp throughout, dictating play and keeping the tempo high.
West Ham responded before the break, with Jarrod Bowen finding the net after capitalizing on a loose ball in the area. It was a reminder for Erik ten Hag’s side that defensive concentration is still a work in progress ahead of the new season.
In the second half, Fernandes stepped up again. He collected the ball just outside the area and curled a well-placed shot past the keeper to restore United’s lead. His quality on the ball and leadership stood out in what was otherwise a scrappy period of play.
Beyond the result, Ten Hag will be pleased to see new signings getting minutes and younger players like Kobbie Mainoo showing promise. The game also gave the squad a needed boost in confidence as they continue their preparations.
United now look ahead to tougher fixtures on the tour, but this win was an encouraging step forward and a reminder of how important Fernandes could be in the season ahead.
